So, I’ve been really busy with music over the last few months demoing and compiling new tracks to go on what was originally going to be a short 5 or 6 track EP… but then I got a bit carried away, and it looks like this collection of tracks is going to end up being another album 🙂

I actually really like the format of an album, perhaps this is because I grew up listening to LPs and Cassette tapes, where tracks always were in the same order… though I have to admit, sometimes the shuffle function on my iPod spits out some pretty amazing musical synchronicity!

Anyway… the fourth as yet un-named Winterpark album is currently taking shape, and I’m really happy with how it’s sounding so far… I’m looking towards a mid year release if all goes according to plan. In creating this new album, I’ve been experimenting with live looping and the creation of atmospheric textures from electric guitar.

This Ableton Instrument  has been created from one of these Loops. The original guitar loop has a pitch-shifting reverb drenched sound, that classic Eno-esque ‘Bloom’ sound. When I transformed this into a sampler based instrument rack, I noticed that wherever you play it on the keyboard you can get some really interesting and diverse textures. I hope you enjoy it!

This is a post for the Ableton Live nerds out there…

I’ve discovered a way to provide dedicated visual feedback functionality for the looper device using the Push User page.

First you need to set up the preferences so Live is sending note information to Push’s user port, and that Push’s user port is set up to send remote messages. This way, Push can remote control Looper, and it also allows for visual feedback in user mode.

Instead of just a regular audio input, I like to group the external instrument rack within a drum rack so I can get visual feedback as to where I am in a 4 bar phrase in native Push mode.

The added benefit with using the external instrument, is that you are able to use a midi clip to send note and velocity information to the push user port channel 1, which then will light up the pads in User Mode.

The ascending notes in the midi clip, send messages to light up push’s top 4 rows, just the same as the drum rack does, with one row representing one bar.

I’ve also created a set of 8 buttons in the bottom left hand side that each correspond to a function I want to map to the looper device, overdub, play, stop, undo, clear, etc…

On this coming Sunday I am presenting and performing at the Ableton Live 9/Push Launch event in Melbourne. I’m presenting about the Toy Harmonium instrument I made that was featured on www.ableton.com.

I’ve been busy putting something together to perform at it that uses the Generative piece that I created for the Toy Harmonium Instrument, and I’ve kind of done a bit of a live mashup with a track off my last album Sunday Morning called “Gotta Sleep Now’.

This live version features Live 9, a Livid Block, Teenage Engineering’s OP-1 synth, Live Guitar looping and processing, as well as vocal samples by the wonderful Susannah Legge.
